Ohioans for the Preservation of Traditional Midwifery

Welcome!

NOTICE: It has been brought to my attention that there are some mistakes and on the site. While we try hard to ensure that the site is well- done, due to our busy lives and thus lack of time to work on the site, we sometimes make errors.

We will be editing the site and correcting these errors over the next few days; please be patient as we do this and respect that fact that this site is a work in progress!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORT!

How You Can Help and some Tools to Begin!

I Care! What Can I Do?

First, join our online group. The fact that you have joined will demonstrate your support and will enable you to communicate with other OPTM members. You'll also be granted access to any upcoming events of activities within the midwifery community. If you are curious about homebirth, you will have the ability to have questions answered by midwives and homebirth fans.

Second, write your representative and tell him or her how you feel about a mandatory licensure bill. Feel free to print out the "Facts" page from this site and use it as a guide while you are defending your opinion.
To find your representative

Third, tell your friends and families about what is going on. Give them our web address and ask them to visit the site.

Fourth, contact Debbie Phillips, an Ohio representative who is highly supportive of the bill. Voice your concerns and educate her as to the potential consequences which could result from a mandatory licensure bill. If you live in or near Athens, Debbie Phillips is your representative and so it is even more important for you to contact her regarding this bill! Let her know what her constituents want!

Fifth, contact one or all of the following State committees:

The State Health Committee

This would be a good place to inform the State Committee of Health that the passing of this bill may have detrimental effects on the health of Ohio women and children. Please see the "facts" page for information of how the bill may effect the health of Ohio women and children. Please note that the representative who is most supportive of and will be submitting this bill is on the this committee!

Inform the chair that, while recipients of Medicaid may have better access to homebirth should this bill pass, homebirth families who are eligible for medicaid may not be able to pay for homebirth services should the fees for service go up. Please see the "facts" page for more information on this subject. Also tell the chair that people who birth at home to avoid state intrusion will suffer from lack of availability of legal midwifery services should this bill pass.
